A shocking accident has rattled the mountaineering community: A 35-year-old German and a 46-year-old Romanian have tragically fallen to their deaths while climbing the South Tyrolean Ortler. A loose rock and a fatal fall led to the tragedy, leaving two other group members slightly injured.
What was meant to be an adventure ended in a tragedy. On Sunday, two climbers, a 35-year-old German and a 46-year-old Romanian, fatally fell off the South Tyrolean Ortler mountain. According to witness statements and reports from Rai Südtirol, a rock got loose as one of the climbers tried to grip it in a fragile terrain. While the climber managed to save himself, his fall triggered a chain reaction that sent two others plummeting to their deaths.
Chain of Unfortunate Events
The climbers were at a seemingly uncomplicated spot, making the tragedy all the more shocking. Mountain rescue reported that the rock got loose in fragile terrain, initiating the chain reaction that led to the men's deaths.
Independent Groups, Shared Fate
According to the online platform “stol.it”, the two victims were part of independent groups but were walking one after the other. Two other group members were also slightly injured or shocked and were taken down the valley for medical care.
