Viral in Austria: A Lifeguard, a Push, and Many Questions

The video of the incident rapidly circulated throughout Austria. It captures the lifeguard pushing the young man, who had hesitated to jump from the tower, into the water. A dispute between the two had preceded this alarming event.

Bernhard Pospisil, the spokesperson for the Steyr Magistrate, confirmed the lifeguard's dismissal: “The employment relationship will be dissolved. There will be a mutual termination. The lifeguard will now take his remaining vacation time.” According to Pospisil, the lifeguard has since recognized and admitted his mistake.

Consequences and Preventative Measures

With the dismissal of the lifeguard, the City of Steyr has taken definitive action in response to the incident. “For us, the matter is now concluded,” says Pospisil. But the city isn't stopping there: In reaction to the incident, Steyr is planning specialized training sessions for lifeguards. The aim of these sessions will be to educate and sensitize staff on handling violent situations and conflicts. With this, the city hopes to ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future, maintaining the public pool in Steyr as a safe and pleasant environment for all visitors.
