In the fateful night, dozens of firefighters tirelessly battled the flames engulfing the tankers, hoping to control the fire and prevent a potential explosion.
Despite their efforts, they were caught off-guard by a sudden, violent explosion. The blast was so powerful that many responders were thrown off their feet. So far, it's known that 46 individuals, including 26 firefighters, have suffered serious injuries. One rescuer lost his life, and four people remain missing.
Still Not Under Control
According to news agencies, the major fire caused by several LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) tankers wasn't under control until midnight, even with a significant presence of the Bucharest fire department. In a precautionary move to prevent further hazards, 3,000 residents within a nearly one-kilometer radius were evacuated.
Government's Response
Given the scale of the disaster, the government swiftly set up a crisis team. Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu stated that they had activated the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism to aid the victims of the fire. Furthermore, emergency hospitals in Bucharest have called on the capital's populace to donate blood to assist the injured.
Cause of Disaster Remains Unclear
As rescue and firefighting efforts continue, the exact cause of the explosions remains uncertain. Investigations are underway to determine the circumstances of the tragedy.
